Spread the Word to End the Word, March 4

Wednesday, March 4, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Student Union, South Cafeteria
Spread the Word to End the Word is an ongoing effort by Special Olympics and the Best Buddies initiative to raise awareness of the hurtful and derogatory use of the "R-Word" (retard or retarded), and its negative impact on individuals with intellectual disabilities and their families. On March 4, the newly forming UAA student chapter of AADMD (American Academy of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry) will host a Spread the Word to End the Word event to bring this national effort to the UAA community.
AADMD is a national organization that actively encourages health care students, faculty and professionals to enhance their knowledge in the care of individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders and intellectual disabilities. The UAA chapter of AADMD is still in the early stages of forming and is seeking new members to join this important effort.
The chapter's first event will be Spread the Word to End the Word, happening March 4, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., in the Student Union South Cafeteria. There will be a speaker and special presentation around noon, as well as free pizza for all attendees. Throughout the event, a pledge will be available for people to sign to stop saying the R-Word as a starting point toward creating more accepting attitudes and communities for all people. Language affects attitudes. Attitudes impact action. Please join us in the first AADMD event of many to Spread the Word to End the Word!
