Guest agency: YWCA Alaska Topic: How can organizations create gender-neutral workplaces that promote pay equity and opportunity?

Think Tanks are a monthly community engagement experience in which a nonprofit agency presents a challenge or issue and attendees brainstorm solutions for the organization.

Background on this month's topic: Nationally, American women make 77 cents on the dollar. In Alaska, the pay gap is even more severe. Alaskan women on average make 67.8 cents for every dollar made by their male counterparts. This problem is persistent across all industries, occupations and education levels. Gender pay inequity is an increasingly critical issue as women play a growing role in their families' economic security.

While legislation has been enacted over the last 40 years to address the pay gap, demonstrable change has been slow.

YWCA Alaska has committed to eliminating the gender pay gap in Alaska by 2025. They created an initiative focusing on two main factors: partnering with Alaska businesses to create gender-neutral workplaces and providing tools to Alaska women to empower them to access higher wages.

Students, faculty, staff and community members-join us to assist the YWCA and contribute your thoughts and ideas to the discussion!
