HPER and UAA Staff Council will collaborate again during spring semester to offer wellness breaks and health information sessions. Classes begin with a "soft opening" on Monday, Feb. 8. Campus buildings that had robust participation in fall semester (University Center, Center for Human Development) will see classes return this week. By Feb. 15 we will have a schedule of routine classes and locations around campus. The schedule will go out in Seawolf Daily and we are working to get a web page with the standing schedule.

Results from fall semester:

A survey of staff interest resulted in 318 responses that guided classes offered. The program ran six weeks in 10 locations around campus (three off campus) and included 15-minute and 30-minute events. More than 100 participants were present, a total of 68 unique participants with many returning.

Staff feedback on student leaders:: "The students were awesome: knowledgeable, friendly, professional. I especially appreciated the stress presentation. The two students were professional and cognizant of starting and ending on time."

Student feedback on the opportunity: "The opportunity to be a part of the launch of wellness activities is not an experience many students get to have and I'm very grateful to be a part of it."

New for  spring semester: email, survey, schedule

A new email address available for staff to communicate with the wellness session leaders is now available. Send questions and feedback to uaa_staffwellness@uaa.alaska.edu.

As you can see from the photo, Professor Jean Marcey now has help from wellness student intern Ben Perrell. Ben is already contacting building managers to find available space for classes. And he has  prepared and posted a survey for all staff who participated in fall wellness breaks. If you received his email, please take the survey.

Spring semester wellness breaks will be lead by students from PEP 453 (Health Promotion). Students will be assigned university buildings or geographic sectors to work with as their wellness "clients." One of their goals this semester is to develop wellness advocates around campus who can help sustain the wellness climate at UAA. Stay tuned!
