David Weaver has cultivated deep roots here at UAA. He was a first-generation college student who earned a degree in sociology, volunteered in the Anchorage community, worked for the Peace Corps in Albania and then returned to UAA, where he helps students through his job as director of University Housing, Dining and Conference Services.

If a massive earthquake slams Anchorage, wildfire rages toward homes or severe storms knock out power, it’s vital for people to be ready. The 99 UAA technical-writing students in Angela Andersen's classes reached out to help neighborhood community councils prepare for disasters.

Philosophy capstone students—armed with starter sprouts and ravioli recipes—condensed big ideas for little minds when they took their 400-level course discussions on food justice into elementary school classrooms in Anchorage.

On Friday, Nov. 18, the UAA Japan Center opened the university's new Tea Room with a ribbon-cutting and traditional tea ceremony. The space for Japanese cultural events honors the memory of 2009 languages grad Monty Dickson.

Children and teachers both will benefit from 'The Northern Journeys' project—a UAA College of Education collaboration with the Anchorage Museum, Alaska Native Heritage Center and other partners—which will help teachers integrate the arts into their classrooms and teach in a culturally responsive way.
