The Alaska Energy Data Gateway: Bringing You More Information, More Easily Wednesday, August 9, noon-1 p.m. ISER Conference Room (1901 Bragaw Street, Suite 301)

The Alaska Energy Data Gateway is an online database that ISER, the Alaska Center for Energy and Power at UAF, and other partner organizations established in 2011, to provide communities across Alaska with data they can use as they develop and improve their energy systems. Information in the database comes from many sources, can be downloaded in various file formats, and is mostly at the community level.

Much of the original data was specifically about energy-for instance, what it cost and how communities generated it-but new, broader kinds of data are now available, and in September an interactive map will be launched, allowing users to see at a glance what kinds of information are available for individual communities.

These improvements are due largely to Rachael Teter, who has been working at ISER this summer as an intern sponsored by First Alaskans Institute, and Kyle Borash, ISER's computer programmer. Rachael Teter will talk about how she came to be an FAI intern, and then describe the information she has added to the data gateway. Kyle Borash, who is creating the interactive map, will talk about his ongoing work.

The data gateway was originally funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy's EPSCoR program, and more recently by the Alaska Energy Authority and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Easy access to information is especially important to Alaska's remote communities, which have for decades relied mainly on small, isolated energy systems that generate power with fuel oil. Many are now looking for ways to make their systems more efficient and less reliant on fuel oil.

1901 Bragaw Street is between Northern Lights and DeBarr Road. Parking is free. Call (907) 786-7710 for directions.

Note: Those who can't attend in person can stream the talk live at stream.iseralaska.org.
