Member of Grammy Award-winning Arcade Fire to speak at UAA Feb. 1, 2018

The Bartlett Lecture Series welcomes Marika Anthony-Shaw on Feb. 1 in the Wendy Williamson Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. for a free public lecture.

A member of Canadian indie rock band Arcade Fire, Marika Anthony-Shaw created Plus1 to drive social change by harnessing and directing the power and energy of a passionate fan base.

Now, with more than $4 million raised and thousands of engaged supporters around the world, she has effectively built a global movement for good by partnering performing artists with high impact nonprofits. In this empowering keynote, Anthony-Shaw discusses her work with philanthropic organizations, including Partners In Health, and she reveals strategies for individuals to get involved with causes that they care about. Offering realistic plans for engaging one's own communities, whether on campus or online, she outlines how any individual can join people together in a shared mission, harness the power of collective energy and positive action and make a real difference in the world.

The Bartlett Lecture Series was established in 1970 by the Bob Bartlett Memorial Fund and the University of Alaska. E.L. Bartlett was one of the first two Alaska Senators sent to Washington D.C. following statehood. He served from 1958 to 1968. The Bartlett Lecture Series was designed to promote a clearer vision of individual freedom and of the public good. Individuals of national and world renown present lectures on substantial topics putting the problems of Alaska and its people into the context of broad philosophic, cultural, social and economic issues.
