FEMA to test nationwide emergency alert system Oct. 3, 2018

by Jess  |

On Wednesday, Oct. 3, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will conduct a nationwide test of its Integrated Public Alert and Warning System. For the first time, the test will include activation of the Wireless Emergency Alert System, meaning cell phones across the country will receive an alert.

Alaskans can expect to receive the alert on cell phones beginning at 10:18 a.m. Cell towers will broadcast the test for approximately 30 minutes and, depending on cell carrier, notification time may vary within that timeframe. Cell phones should receive the message once.

These cell phone alerts are used to warn the public about dangerous weather, missing children and other critical situations.

Also, at 10:20 a.m., the Emergency Action Notification will activate nationally on radio and television broadcasters, cable systems, satellite radio and television providers, and wireline video providers.

Please be aware that this alert will cause a temporary disruption in classrooms or meetings. Visit fema.gov/emergency-alert-test for additional information on this nationwide test.
