March 21: Reception for Kimura Gallery exhibition, 'Mishaps, Miscalculations, Oracles, and Aeons'

The UAA Kimura Gallery will be exhibiting exciting new work March 4-April 12 by Santa-Fe based artist, Daniel McCoy Jr. (Muscogee (Creek) Nation/Citizen Potawatomi Nation) in his exhibit: Mishaps, Miscalculations, Oracles, and Aeons.

Please join us for an exhibition reception Thursday, March 21, 4:30-7 p.m.

The bright, graphic, jam-packed work of Daniel McCoy Jr. references styles and subjects drawn from comics, Americana, punk rock, and psychedelia. Like an extended guitar riff, McCoy's illusory cacophony of repeated patterns, shapes, and motifs seem to move in and out of optical clarity-a sinewy line becomes a snake, a thought bubble becomes a floating purple cloud, a landscape emerges in front of a series of color-blocks only to fade behind them again. The lines and marks simmer with other-worldly energy, pulsating with humor and dread-possibility and contradiction.

McCoy's imagery is filled with familiar-seeming people, animals, landscapes, symbols-all of whom operate as though characters from an ongoing story whose moral lies somewhere across the surface. Although each of the artworks in this exhibition were conceived of individually, they appear as parts of a larger narrative. A serialized meditation on the passage of time itself.

The Kimura Gallery is located on the second floor of the Fine Arts Building. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
