Reminder: Windows 7 upgrade project and new process to re-allocate surplus computers

Windows 7 to Windows 10 upgrade project

Microsoft announced this past fall that Windows 7 support will be ending Jan. 14, 2020. This includes any future security patches and software support. Because of this, IT has been diligently working on upgrading all Windows 7 computers to Windows 10; however, only computers with "I-series" (I3, I5, I7, etc.) processors or equivalent will support a Windows 10 upgrade. That said, all computers with older chipsets will not be able to upgrade to Windows 10 and will need to be removed from the UAA network prior to the Jan. 14, 2020 deadline.

These computers can be replaced with a newer "used" Windows 10 computer, if available, at no cost; otherwise, a new computer will need to be purchased by the department.

If you have a Windows 7 computer and have not been contacted by IT, please contact the Technical Support Center (TSC) at 786-4646 or email uaa.techsupport@alaska.edu to request an evaluation. If you do not know what version of Windows you are running, follow these steps:

  1. Hold down the Windows Key (Windows key) on your keyboard and press 'R'
  2. In the Run Prompt box, type: winver
  3. A window will pop up displaying the Windows version.

New process for internal re-allocation of surplus computers to UAA departments

Because of this initiative, GSS Surplus and IT Services have teamed up to develop a new process to ensure older non-upgradable Windows 7 computers do not get re-introduced into the UAA environment after they are surplused. Effective immediately:

All requests for used surplus computers need to be made by contacting the Technical Support Center (TSC) at 786-4646 or email uaa.techsupport@alaska.edu. A ticket will be routed to our ITS Desktop Team, who will validate inventory, package and deliver the computer. Customers who contact GSS directly will be redirected to the TSC.

Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. Please note: The process to request a pickup of a surplus computers/equipment has not changed - continue to contact GSS for this.
