UAA Budget Reduction Update

by Cathy Sandeen, UAA Chancellor  |

Dear UAA Community,

I am writing today with the latest information in our budget reduction planning for fiscal year ’21. UAA is facing an $11.8 million reduction overall.

Academic program reductions

Thank you all for the input you have provided in response to the deans’ recommendations for academic program revisions. As outlined previously, this is the first step in a process leading to final decisions from the Board of Regents at its June 2020 meeting. You can review the full timeline for this process.

The provost’s recommendations are now posted to the expedited program review status website. I will review these recommendations carefully prior to making my own recommendations to President Johnsen and the Board of Regents on March 23.

I encourage you to provide comments through the survey located under the feedback tab on the expedited program review website. In addition, we have scheduled a public testimony session for March 11, 6–7:30 p.m. in Lucy Cuddy Hall. USUAA has organized a student testimony session on March 18, 5:30–7 p.m. in UAA/APU Consortium Library, Room 307.

Administrative program reductions

Vice chancellors of our administrative functions have posted their initial recommendations for reductions in their areas. You may view those recommendations and the timeline on the administrative review website. The Campus Planning Advisory Board (CPAB) is reviewing these vice chancellor recommendations and will provide its recommendations to me by March 11.

As you will note, we still have approximately $2 million in reductions to identify in order to meet our target of $8 million for our administrative areas. The statewide office is considering implementing furloughs for fiscal year ’21. If they do so, that will help fill in the additional gap; however, I am interested in your ideas for further reductions. Please provide your thoughts via this survey located under the feedback tab on the administrative review website.

I am proud of the UAA community as we go through this challenging process together. Though some of you are directly affected by proposed changes, you have behaved in a highly professional and civil manner as you expressed your concerns. Those who are not directly affected have treated others with understanding and compassion. All of our leaders are working diligently to share information and listen to members of their respective communities.

As I have said before, none of us want to make these difficult decisions, but this is the situation we are in, and we are required to do so. I sincerely appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we navigate this process together.

Sincerely,
Cathy Sandeen
UAA Chancellor
