UAA celebrates spring 2020 Meritorious Service Award recipients

Spring 2020 Meritorious Service Award recipients, Edna DeVries and Vic Fischer.

For the spring 2020 semester, Edna DeVries and Vic Fischer will be awarded the Meritorious Service Award. This award is bestowed to an individual who has demonstrated significant work in the area of public, academic, volunteer or philanthropic service to UAA, one of the community campuses or an Alaska community.

UAA celebrates spring 2020 Honorary Degree recipients

For the spring 2020 semester, Jean Pollard and Molly McCammon will be awarded the Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters, and John Torgerson with the Honorary Doctor of Laws. The criterion for individuals to receive an honorary degree from UAA is evidence of a significant and lasting contribution to the university, the state of Alaska or to the individuals' discipline or profession.

Thanks to a generous response to our plea for people making cloth face coverings to donate to UAA essential workers, you can pick up a mask or two for yourself at the Student Health and Counseling Center. Employees who need to work on campus, and students residing on campus, are welcome to call the Center at 786-4050 to ensure they still have inventory and to be let in to the facility.

The University of Alaska Anchorage’s spring commencement activities will look a little different this year in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. But even a pandemic will not prevent UAA from celebrating the spring Class of 2020 graduates on May 3, via a special website. The site honors the accomplishments of more than 1,150 undergraduate, graduate and professional school students from the Anchorage campus.

A black bear has been spotted on and around the Anchorage campus, specifically on the Goose Lake trail. Although foot traffic on campus is minimal, this is a good time to remind everyone to be aware of surroundings and take safety precautions when venturing outside.
