Alternate course delivery extended through summer session
by Cathy Sandeen, UAA Chancellor |
Dear UAA Students,
First and foremost, I want to thank you again for your resiliency as we move through these challenging times together. We have almost completed our second week of learning via alternate delivery methods, and I am proud of the way everyone came together to make this transition a reality. It really is a testament to your strength and innovation.
I also wanted to share some important updates about spring courses and commencement as well as summer courses and activities.
Summer Courses
First, you should be aware we are extending alternate course delivery through the
summer 2020 semester to ensure the health and safety of our students and employees.
This decision allows us to plan course offerings for the summer semester and maximize
the number of courses we can offer you via alternate delivery methods.
Spring Courses: Credit/No Credit Option
As you may know, you have the option to change the grading for each of your classes
to a credit/no credit basis instead of a letter grade. A “Credit” grade earned in spring or summer semester 2020
will count toward elective, prerequisite, general education, degree, major and/or
minor requirements.
You have until April 27, the last day of spring semester instruction, to complete and submit the Credit/No Credit Option form for your spring 2020 courses should you choose to do so. We recommend you make this decision closer to the deadline and consult with your academic advisor. If you do not wish to change to credit/no credit for your classes, you do not need to take any action.
Spring Commencement
Though we will not be holding our in-person Commencement ceremony in May as planned,
we want to celebrate our graduates and help mark the occasion. If you’re graduating,
stay tuned for details about a gift to help commemorate this amazing milestone. We
hope to celebrate in person at a date in the future, though it is too soon to say
when that can be. More than 65% of survey respondents told us that some kind of ceremony
or celebration is important. We hear you and we agree, so for now please accept our
gift. We are so proud of our graduates—congratulations!
Fall Registration
Fall registration opens for graduate students on April 3 and undergraduate registration
begins with seniors on April 6. See the registrar’s website to find out when your registration opens.
Summer Activities
All face-to-face summer group activities (camps, conferences, etc.) are canceled through
at least June 30, 2020. Alternate delivery models are being explored for many of these
activities. Organizers will be in touch with participants as more information becomes
available.
For the most up-to-date information about the university’s response to the ongoing COVID-19 situation, keep an eye on the UAA coronavirus information site. I also encourage you to take a look at the useful tips for online learning that your fellow students submitted in the last few weeks.
Thank you all for your patience. Stay safe, stay strong and be well.
Sincerely,
Cathy Sandeen
UAA Chancellor
