UA universities will move forward together

by Cathy Sandeen, UAA Chancellor  |

Dear UAA Community,

The news of President Johnsen’s resignation from the University of Alaska system yesterday may feel unsettling for many of you. I want to assure you that UA’s universities remain strong. As your chancellor, I am committed to moving forward positively to help ensure the bright future our students, staff, faculty and state require.

There remain significant challenges ahead; however, I believe the collective strengths of our universities will serve as the prevailing force to drive progress and productive change for our students and for Alaska.

The chancellors of UAA, UAF and UAS have forged a close working relationship over the past year. As Chancellor Caulfield prepares to enter retirement, Chancellor White and I will continue to work together and with the interim chancellor of UAS to support each other’s efforts. We will also work collectively with Acting President Rizk and the Board of Regents to address immediate next steps as the board appoints an interim president for the system.

For now, I wish to thank you for your continued work on behalf of UAA and students on all our campuses. It is a privilege to serve alongside you as we steadily lead this organization forward.

Finally, please join me in thanking Jim Johnsen for five years of service to the University of Alaska and wishing him well in his future endeavors.

Sincerely,
Cathy Sandeen
UAA Chancellor
