Chancellor update on Strategic Planning and Shared Services

by Cathy Sandeen, UAA Chancellor  |

Your feedback is requested urgently regarding the UAA Shared Services Proposal. As you know, UAA has faced many rounds of budget reductions. This has created challenges fulfilling fiscal management functions within our current decentralized model. To address this need, Chancellor Sandeen formed a task force, led by Tri-chairs Christi Bell, Aaron Dotson and Bill Jacob, to explore the possibility of creating a customer-centric, shared services solution for fiscal management on the Anchorage campus.

Read the task force’s recommendations. Please provide feedback to uaa_feedback@alaska.edu.

Dear UAA Community,

It is my pleasure to update you on two major universitywide initiatives. As you may recall, I launched strategic planning and shared services initiatives at the end of the spring semester, and I am happy to report that we made substantial progress over the summer.

Strategic Planning
Our current institutional strategic plan, UAA 2020, expires at the end of this calendar year. Development of our new plan, UAA 2025, is well underway. Tri-chairs Christi Bell, LuAnn Piccard and Joel Potter, along with a dedicated steering committee, have collected data and initial input. The tri-chairs have led a number of discussions over the summer resulting in updated drafts of our mission, vision and objectives.

Next steps include extensive input from the entire UAA community and our stakeholders, which will lead to a completed plan by December 2020. Drafts will be posted online with opportunities for you to provide feedback. Look for invitations to events to join in the coming weeks where you can provide input as well. Broad participation in this process will allow us to create a vibrant and dynamic plan driven by collective goals and values.

Shared Services
As you know, UAA has faced many rounds of budget reductions. This has created challenges fulfilling fiscal management functions within our current decentralized model. To address this need, I formed a task force, led by Tri-chairs Christi Bell, Aaron Dotson and Bill Jacob, to explore the possibility of creating a customer-centric, shared services solution for fiscal management on the Anchorage campus. Read the task force’s recommendations.

Next steps include soliciting feedback broadly from the Anchorage campus community prior to making my final decision. Please note there will be a quick turnaround period for this feedback in order to respond to pressing budget reductions in FY22. We value your input and encourage you to respond swiftly during this time. Fiscal management is a critical and immediate need on our campus, and we aim to ensure your needs are addressed. Keep an eye out for separate communications detailing the various ways you can participate in this process.

I am so pleased with the progress we have made on both strategic planning and shared services. Please join me in expressing gratitude to our colleagues who worked diligently over the summer to position us to finalize these critical initiatives.

Sincerely,
Cathy Sandeen
UAA Chancellor
