Psychology senior Tucker Sawyer is studying rat laughter for his senior thesis. It’s no joke. In fact, identifying and categorizing the ultrasonic vocalizations of lab rats could change the way we interpret drug research, care for lab animals and understand the origins of our own sense of joy.

UAA students and faculty collaborate to curb the spread of COVID-19 misinformation

As the world continues to navigate this once-in-a-generation pandemic, new scientific breakthroughs are unearthed every day. Accompanying this free flow of information is an increase of damaging misinformation. Working to curb the spread of online misinformation is the Alaska Public Health Information Response Team, a multidisciplinary collaboration between professors and students in UAA’s Department of Journalism and Public Communications and College of Health.

New UAA scholarships support first-time and returning students

University of Alaska Anchorage has ramped up efforts to increase enrollment in the past year, with incentives for returning students, first-time freshmen and residential students.

Parking lot closures scheduled for mid-May

In mid-may, the Central Parking Garage will be closed Sunday evening (May 16, 2021) and remain closed through Wednesday (May 19, 2021). Also, on Tuesday (May 18, 2021), the Spine portion connected to the East Parking Lot garage and East Campus Central as well as Alumni Drive between UAA Drive and the Library parking lot entrance will be closed.

Vice Provost & COH Dean Jeff Jessee announces retirement

"It is with mixed emotions that I announce my intention to retire as vice provost of UA health programs and dean of the UAA College of Health on July 31 of this year," wrote Jeff Jessee in a message to the UAA community. "Serving the University of Alaska for the past four years has been an enormous honor, and stepping away from this role will be bittersweet. I feel it is the right time, though, as I look forward to the new opportunities that retirement will bring."

UAA student essay selected as cover article for upcoming ‘Film Matters’ magazine

Samantha Van Zandt, a UAA student who took WRTG 111 last summer, submitted her essay on Quentin Tarantino's films Kill Bill Vol. I & II to the undergraduate film journal Film Matters. Not only did the journal agree to publish, but she'll also be the featured article, with the cover dedicated to her piece.
