Congratulations to Faculty Development Award recipients

Colleague Oh Wow! AwardUAA’s new Faculty Development and Instructional Support unit (representing a merger of CAFE, CCEL and AI&e) is pleased to announce its COW (Colleague-Oh-Wow!) Faculty Development Awards for 2020-21. The success of UAA’s faculty development initiatives and programs are due in large part to the willingness of UAA faculty and staff who share their time and expertise with their colleagues. Two national research studies on unusually effective universities have indicated that investment in faculty development is one of the top ways in which a university can increase its retention rates and student success. This year put such unusual demands on all of us to step up and go beyond our usual roles and responsibilities in order to serve our students, so UAA is particularly appreciative of the dedication and contributions of our colleagues this year – thank you!

COW Award recipients – who receive highly coveted bovine-themed congratulations to appreciative “moos” from the audience – have made major contributions to faculty development initiatives across the UAA system. This year’s recipients include:

  • the UAA Pivot Team (including both instructional designers and administrative support staff) for a heroic job of helping faculty quickly and effectively transition to online teaching in the face of the pandemic (thanks to members Stephanie Ahern, Louise Butler, Luis Chavez, Maiken Erickson and members of her group in ITS, Jon Farmer, Dr. Heather Nash, Claudia Pearson, Dr. Jennifer Pedersen, Dr. Kathryn Schild, Andrew Skellen, Jimmy Tuttle and Katie Walker);
  • Britteny Howell (Population Health Sciences) for volunteering to help in a host of “above and beyond” ways, including helping coordinate the CCEL Urban in Alaska conference;
  • Amber Christensen Fullmer (Native Student Services) and Corrie Whitmore (Public Health), for outstanding work training colleagues in the importance and nuances of offering land acknowledgments recognizing UAA’s debt to Alaska’s Indigenous nations;
  • a host of faculty who attended 10 or more faculty development sessions this year (our SuperAchievers: Stephanie Ahern, Louise Butler, Luis Chavez, Jon Farmer, Heather Nash, Claudia Pearson, Jennifer Pedersen, Kathryn Schild, Andrew Skellen, Heather Swanson, Jimmy Tuttle and Katie Walker); and
  • Page Brannon (Consortium Library) and DeAnn Ruiz (KPC) for attending a (superhuman!) 20 sessions each.

We thank each and every one of you for your extraordinary commitment to teaching, learning and student success at UAA!
