New leadership hires within Administrative Services

It is my pleasure to share two exciting announcements within Administrative Services. After a competitive search process, Justin Atteberry has been hired as executive director of Shared Services. Additionally, Ben Shier has been named chief information officer (CIO) after serving in this role in an interim capacity since December 2019.

Faculty Learning Community: Teaching Climate Change Across the Curriculum

This opportunity is open to full- and part-time faculty, postdocs, and GTAs across the UA system who perceive a connection between their course(s) and any aspect of climate change, and who wish to facilitate their students in making that connection. Folks from all disciplines are welcome and encouraged to participate, including new and past participants.

Supporting LGBTQ+ Student Success: A Learning Community for Faculty and Staff

Open to faculty and staff, this community's discussions will be based on the book, "Supporting Success for LGBTQ+ Students: Tools for Inclusive Campus Practice." Written by Dr. Cindy Ann Kilgo (Assistant Professor of Higher Education and Student Affairs, Indiana University) this resource has been added to the collection in the UAA/APU Consortium Library.

Alaska INBRE investigators receive seven administrative supplement awards

The NIH National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) awards Administrative Supplement opportunities to develop collaborations between investigators, purchase equipment, address critical issues of women's health, and surveillance studies of SARS-CoV-2 viral strains. Since 2019 the Alaska INBRE program has received all seven submitted Administrative Supplements totaling $2,028,441.

Last year, we held a program called the Cultural Identity Project, an Elder-led program at UAA. The program incorporated storytelling from Elders; hands-on cultural activities; discussion and connection with other Alaska Native students, staff, and faculty; exploration of cultural identity; and documentation and sharing of cultural identity and strengths.
