Celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

by Sean Parnell, UAA Chancellor  |

Dear UAA Community,

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. left a legacy of championing social justice. Today we celebrate his life and the significant contributions he made advancing civil rights for Black people and other marginalized groups in our country.

Dr. King said, “Oppressed people cannot remain oppressed forever. The yearning for freedom eventually manifests itself.”

I encourage you to take time to reflect and learn more about his work by reading or listening to one of his essays, speeches or sermons that inspired and spoke to the hearts and minds of a nation. His courageous and powerful words led to social change and continue to be a catalyst for advancing justice across all races, genders and groups in the United States.

Together, let’s celebrate the unique and rich diversity of our university community and strive to continue Dr. King’s work through our educational pursuits and opportunities to build a place that is welcoming, inclusive, respectful and appreciative of the meaningful contributions of each individual at UAA.

Sincerely,
Sean Parnell
UAA Chancellor
