Resources for those impacted by invasion of Ukraine

by Sean Parnell, UAA Chancellor  |

Dear UAA Community,

In watching news reports, video feeds, and social media, I want to recognize the pain and misery suffered by the people of Ukraine after the invasion of the Russian Federation’s military forces. While it’s up to our national leaders to address the international crisis and preserve and protect our nation’s interests and people, we must not turn a blind eye to the carnage and cost of war for all and speak up about it.

People are never truly free until they can be free of fear; free of war; and free to live in peace so they can decide who will govern them and how they will be governed. Those truths have been sorely tested this week in Ukraine and many people there bear the real, visible cost of war now.

We also want to acknowledge and recognize that war exacts a heavy cost on people far from the actual conflict. To our students, faculty and staff whose heritage and extended families are connected to Ukraine, Russia and Eastern Europe — our hearts are with you during this difficult and uncertain time. Indeed, here at UAA, we have already offered help to several people in this situation.

As the fighting in Ukraine continues, we want to offer resources to cope. If you or those close to you have been impacted, or if you simply need someone to talk to about the situation, please reach out to the Student Health and Counseling Center or Dean of Students Office.

Additionally, we recognize and honor our military community, including active duty, Reserve and National Guard members. We know this can be an uncertain time for you and your family members, as well, and we remain continuously grateful for the service and sacrifices you and your loved ones have made and continue to make for our country.

As a university community we stand with our students, faculty and staff who are affected by this conflict and encourage you all to check in with yourselves as well as those around you. Stay safe, offer support as you’re able and don’t be afraid to ask for help. In times of uncertainty, our community comes together, stands together, and provides hope for one another. That’s what makes us strong.

Thank you, Seawolves.

Sincerely,
Sean Parnell,
UAA Chancellor
