Interested in taking private music lessons for college credit?

by UAA Department of Music  |

Have you ever tried to find creative ways to expand your horizons, follow your interests and dreams, and pursue a creative outlet in your university experience, but came up short when you were searching for options?
Why not consider signing up for a private music lesson, for credit, or perhaps joining one of our music ensembles, with one of the talented and eminently qualified faculty in our own music department?

UAA offers the MUS A164 option, for nonmajors, to sign up for private music lessons for college credit.  The department’s highly qualified faculty offer these lessons covering most of the common instruments and instrumental families, as well as vocal instruction.  Our ensemble options are varied, including opportunities for vocalists (University Singers), instrumentalists (University Sinfonia), jazz (University Jazz Ensemble), chamber music (Chamber Music and Accompanying, or Chamber Ensemble), as well as options for guitarists (University Guitar Ensemble).

Details

  • Course: MUS A164, various instrument designations (including voice)
  • Tuition and fees: Tuition is $234 per credit; course fee is $308 per credit, plus “UAA Network Fee” of $9 per credit) total cost per credit is $551.
  • Number of credits:  1 credit gets students a 30 minute lesson per week.  2 credits gets students a one hour lesson per week (then the tuition and course fee is x2 or a total of $1102 for a one hour weekly lesson).

Since all of these courses qualify as a “free elective” to help you get to the 120 credits for graduation, it seems like expanding your options in the creative sense would be a great complement to your studies, particularly if you might have some experience and interest in this area.

Pursuing study in the creative area of academia is an excellent way of rounding out your academic experience, and in some cases, this added ability could be a plus for future career marketability. In addition, it’s a great stress reliever from the intensity of academic studies, as the ensembles, by and large, don’t require weekly assignments outside of the class meeting times. There are one credit options for all of these courses which means it’s easier to fit one of these courses into your credit load.
