Dr. Helena S. Wisniewski, UAA's Vice Provost for Research and Graduate Studies, was invited to the State Capitol in January and February 2014 at the invitation of Representative Mia Costello, Representative Shelley Hughes, and Representative Cathy Muñoz.  Dr. Wisniewski was asked to provide testimony to the House of Representatives Economic Development Working Group in January. She was also invited to provide testimony before the House of Representatives Economic Development, Trade, & Tourism Committee and the House of Representatives University of Alaska Finance Committee in February.

On January 1, 2014, Vice Provost for Research Dr. Helena Wisniewski ran her first sled dog race in the Alaskan Sled Dog & Racing Association's Orville & Doris Lake Memorial Race at Tozier Track in Anchorage. Dr. Helena S. Wisniewski, Finalist for the 2013 Gold Pan Awards

The Anchorage Chamber of Commerce Gold Pan Awards is one of the organization’s longest running civic programs, established in 1957 as Anchorage's No. 1 premiere business awards event. This year on September 13, 2013, the UAA Vice Provost for Research, Dr. Helena S. Wisniewski was a finalist for the Chamber of Commerce Gold Pan Awards for Entrepreneurial Excellence. The Gold Pan Awards are given to members, organizations and businesses for their commitment to community service, business and entrepreneurial excellence. Awards are given in four categories and Dr. Wisniewski was a finalist in the category of Entrepreneurial Excellence. In this category, the individuals must have started, organized, and managed a successful business, exemplifying creative vision, talent and innovative thinking that creates business opportunities. The awards were presented on September 13, 2013, at the “Casino Royale" - 56th annual Anchorage Chamber Gold Pan Awards at the Dena'ina Center.

Congressman Don Young visited UAA on April 30, 2013, at the invitation of Dr. Helena Wisniewski, Vice Provost for Research. The Congressman received an overview of the exciting research and commercialization efforts ongoing at UAA. He witnessed the simulation lab in action at the Health Sciences Building, received a tour of the ConocoPhillips Integrated Sciences Building, and actively engaged in presentations by the Vice Provost and faculty. The Congressman shared that he was very impressed with the research and the commercialization effort at UAA, and the two hours were definitely well spent.
