Bethany Buchanan, DNP, FNP
Term Assistant Professor
Bethany Buchanan is a part time professor in the family nurse practitioner program at the University of Alaska Anchorage. She teaches the Advanced Practice Roles class (NS 618) and assists with FNP students in NS 660-664.
After receiving her BSN from the University of Colorado, she soon pursued her Masters of Science in Nursing degree from the University of Alaska Anchorage in 1997 and later, her Doctorate in Nursing Practice (DNP) degree from Chatham University.
Dr. Buchanan has been in the integrative medicine field for 20 years and is currently working at Avante Medical Center, a clinic she co-founded in 2002 with a naturopathic physician. She is past president of the Alaska Nurse Practitioner Association. During her tenure she initiated the first annual statewide directory of Nurse Practitioners, rewrote the bylaws and revamped the organization to become more active. She was named Nurse Practitioner of the Year in 2003 by AANP (American Academy of Nurse Practitioners) by her peers.
Her scholarship interest include presentations at local and national nurse practitioner conferences on integrative topics. She recently (2013) spoke at the National Nurse Practitioner Symposium in Colorado on the topic of "Integrative Approaches to Depression Management", her current area of interest.
