Question for Betty.

I recently had an abortion and I don't know how to deal with the depression I feel.  I'm not comfortable talking to my friends anymore.  I feel like I need to talk to someone, but, I can barely get the right words out without breaking down.  Is there someone I can talk to at the Health Center that is experienced in dealing with this situation and these emotions?

Betty's Answer.

Yes, you can get help today!  You can access a mental health professional by calling 786-4040.  If the counselor is not immediately available to speak with you, they will call you back today.  These are common natural feelings, and talking about your feelings with a nonjudgmental professional is a good way to start.

Each woman's emotional responses to abortion vary depending upon the unique factors in her life.  These emotions may change in the context of your life, disappearing rapidly after the abortion or lingering for a while, becoming stronger at moments and disappearing at others.  They may change with your hormonal cycle.  Any feelings you have are natural and normal.

Reaching out for help is the first step. Call the Student Health & Counseling Center at 786-4040 to talk to a mental health professional.
