Question for Betty.

I was on depo provera for 4 years, I have been off for almost two years now. . . me and my man have been trying for almost a year, do you think something is wrong?  How can I check on this?

Betty's Answer.

Thanks for your question.  Depo-Provera (DMPA), does not permanently impact endocrine function, however, return of fertility may be delayed.  According to the manufacturer's information, within 10 months of the last injection, 50% of women who discontinue DMPA to become pregnant will conceive.  In a small proportion of women, fertility is delayed until 18 months after the last injection. The persistance of ovulation suppression following DMPA discontinuation is not related to the duration of use, but is related to weight.  Women with lower body weights conceive sooner after discontinuing DMPA than women with higher body weights.

It would be prudent to see your health care provider for evaluation at this time.  You or your partner may have another condition affecting fertility, or it may just be delayed due to DMPA use.
