Question for Betty.

Dear Betty,

I have been on the Nuva ring for two years now, and nothing like this has ever happened before. My menstruation week was scheduled to start on Monday the 20th, I attempted to take the ring out and could not find it.. I have a boyfriend and we are sexually active so I thought it might have been pulled out (it happens) during intercourse that prior weekend. Still no period. I have felt around multiple times since and I can't find it- but I have also missed the period completely which leads me to believe that it is still in (as I have taken a pregnancy test as well). Does that happen? And if so, what is my next step?

Betty's Answer.

Dear Nuva Ring user,

Make an appointment with the Student Health & Counseling Center for a GYN exam.  The ring could still be in your vagina, hiding behind your cervix.  In the meantime, use a back-up method of birth control, such as condoms until you are seen. Nuva rings may occasionally be dislodged with intercourse.  If  you observe this, you should rinse it off with soap and water and reinsert the ring.
