Question for Betty.

Dear Betty,

My friend has her period every 2 to 2 1/2 months.  I am worried about her, but, she refuses to see a doctor.  Please tell me if that is normal and what can cause this?

Betty's Answer.

Dear Friend,

What a wonderful friend you are, to be concerned about your friend and to seek information to help her.  Your friend has irregular periods at this time.  I'm not sure if this is new for her, or always has been the case.  Many things can cause irregular menses, including stress (like college), changes in environment (like living away from home), changes in weight, changes in hormones, and sometimes thyroid problems.  If your friend has always had periods every 8 weeks, then that is normal for her.  If she is experiencing new changes, then it would be a good idea to have this checked out.  She might not be aware that we offer free physicals and office visits at the Student Health & Counseling Center.
