Student Affairs Assessment

UAA's Student Affairs (SA) division has been building assessment capacity and developing a culture of evidence since 2011. Assessment is any effort to gather, analyze and interpret evidence which describes institutional, departmental or program effectiveness. 

The Office of Student Affairs provides consultative support for SA assessment projects and data needs. The Assessment and Strategic Projects Director and SA Research Data Analyst provide assistance with departmental and divisional assessment efforts to strengthen student learning, development and success. These positions support an environment for evidence-based decision-making through organized research and assessment initiatives and the mining and analysis of institution and student performance data to connect with program, department, and activity outcomes. SA assessment & reporting processes include:

End of Year Report

Informs the UAA community and other stakeholders of the annual contributions of UAA Student Affairs divisions, departments, programs, and employees. The EOY Report highlights SA’s mission and purpose, significant facts and figures, points of pride, updates on progress made toward goal attainment from the previous year, and priorities and objectives for the upcoming year.

Annual Goal Review & Alignment Process

Identifies departmental annual goal and objectives that support UAA Core Theme Indicators and includes beginning, mid, and end of year reviews and progress reports. This process demonstrates alignment with UAA and Student Affairs mission and goals based on measurable outcomes.

Student Affairs Key Indicators and Data Points

Illustrates SA mission and core theme fulfillment, contributions to UAA Core Theme indicators, program performance and outcomes.

Student Affairs Student Outcomes

Serves as a framework for SA to align engagement activities and services to student learning and development and provides a common language in creating meaningful interactions with students and building connections between learning and growth occurring throughout their academic coursework, career preparation, outside-the-classroom activities, and daily life. SA departments identify two learning outcomes in alignment with this framework to emphasize and measure each year.

Annual Assessment

Offers an inventory of annual assessment projects and metrics, evidence of use of data for continuous improvement, and key findings for assessment activities and learning outcomes.

Assessment Team (A-Team)

Provides leadership at the divisional and department levels to promote a culture of evidence and support quality assessment activities for the improvement of programs and services across Student Affairs.

Strategic Planning & Assessment: FY11 - FY15

Guided the Student Affairs organization development process (FY11, Mindset; FY12, Foundation; FY13, Building; FY14, Assessment; FY15, Alignment).

CAS Self-Studies

Allows functional areas to conduct analyses and ensure outcomes are of high quality and aligned with stated mission, student needs and national peers. The Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS) Self Study is a national standard of practice assessment. Staff and faculty reviewers beginning in FY12 conducted a large scale SA-wide CAS Self-Study. The strengths, opportunities, and program priorities identified through the studies continue to guide program improvement.
