UAA 2010 Full Scale Accreditation Evaluation

The University of Alaska Anchorage has completed the process of renewing our institutional accreditation with the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. This renewal is done through reaffirmation of accreditation on a regular cycle. This accreditation includes UAA and our community campuses in Kenai, Kodiak, and Mat-Su.

UAA volunteered, along with three other institutions in the region, to serve as a pilot institution in the development of new accreditation process. This new process focused on UAA's mission fulfillment, with an emphasis on how all units contribute together to the core themes of our mission, rather than looking at units as separate entities. The new process resulted in a self study, developed through shorter focused "chapters" submitted in March and September 2009, and March and September 2010.

An evaluation team visited UAA in Fall 2009 to assess how UAA applies its resources and capacities toward mission fulfillment, as outlined in the self review report submitted in September 2009. While on campus, the team met with campus leadership, held open forums for faculty, staff, students, and community advisors, and visited the Kenai Peninsula College campus.

Another site visit with evaluators assigned to each of UAA's core themes took place in October 2010. This team of evaluators met with campus leadership (including groups important to the planning and evaluation of core themes), held open forums, and visited community campuses in Mat-Su and Kenai. The final report from this evaluation team, along with UAA's institutional response to the report, is posted under "Current Reports and Documents."

In January 2011, the NWCCU Board of Commissioners reviewed the materials and report from the site visit team and formally ruled on UAA's reaffirmation of accreditation. You can find the letter reaffirming UAA's accreditation, along with the commendations and recommendations that arose from this review, on the "Current Reports and Documents" tab.

With the completion of the pilot, UAA now enters the new NWCCU process, which consists of a seven-year cycle completing reports in the Falls of 2011, 2013, 2015, and 2017. Stay tuned for more information about the new cycle!
