About UPD

The University Police Department at the University of Alaska Anchorage receives its statutory authority under Alaska Statute 14.40.043. This statute, enacted in 1992, bestowed general police powers upon police officers employed by the University. Each UAA officer, like their municipal and State counterparts, must meet the strict standards established by the Alaska Police Standards Council. Only officers who are fully commissioned and certified by the State as Police Officers carry firearms.

UAA officers also provide special services unique to the University setting. Those services include maintaining security of the University buildings, providing crime prevention classes to students, staff and faculty, providing safety escorts on the University campus, vehicle and room unlocks, and vehicle jumpstarts.

The department is open 24 hours per day, 365 days per year, and can be reached at 786-1120. A staff of professional emergency dispatchers is on hand to take your call and direct the proper personnel to assist you.
