Interested in a Career in Health Care?
Whether you are interested in learning more about health-care careers in general, or a career in medicine in particular, the Alaska WWAMI Program can help.
Alaska PreMed Summit
The Alaska WWAMI Program and the UAA Office of Undergraduate Research and Scholarship (OURS) sponsor the annual Alaska PreMed Summit. Open to anyone interested in pursuing a career in medicine, the Alaska PreMed Summit provides information about the academic path one must take to become a physician, the MCAT examination, the AMCAS application process, financial aid for medical school, and more. A highlight of the PreMed Summit is the panel discussion, in which participants gain first-hand knowledge from pre-medical undergraduates, current medical students, physicians in residency training, and practicing physicians. Tours of the Alaska WWAMI facilities and mock medical school interviews are also offered to participants. High school and undergraduate students, high school counselors, college advisors, and parents are invited to attend.
Alaska WWAMI High School and Undergraduate "Pathways" Programs
From high school to medical or graduate school: the suite of pathways programs created by Alaska WWAMI and the National Institutes of Health's NIDDK form a complete and sustainable pathway for talented Alaskan students from Alaska Native and other minority backgrounds into biomedical research and/or medical careers. In addition, the Della Keats/U-DOC Summer Enrichment Program offers opportunities to Alaskan high school students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are interested in pursuing careers in health care.
