Computers and Laptops

Computers have become important professionally and personally; academically and administratively. IT Services offers services to students, staff, and faculty including purchasing, service & repair, and computer labs.

Field Services (Service and Repairs)

IT Field Services offers installation, maintenance and repair for desktop and laptop systems, mobile devices and peripheral network equipment. IT Field Services is a certified Apple and Dell authorized service provider, but they also work on other brands of equipment. Services are provided to UAA students, faculty, and staff for both work and personal devices. To initiate a Field Services request, customers should contact the UAA Technical Support Center at 786-4646 or send an email to uaa.techsupport@alaska.edu. Work-related devices are eligible for pickup or onsite service, or can be dropped off at the IT Services Suite (SSB 120).  Personal devices need to be dropped off to IT Services.

Billing

Starting July 1, 2018, most non-urgent IT Field Services work performed on UAA-owned computer equipment no longer has a labor charge associated with the work.  Work on personal equipment does incur a charge. Please see the Service Expectations and Engagement Process page to view what services qualify as no-cost work compared to work that incurs a charge ($100/hr).

Personal Equipment

Customers requesting work on their personal computers and other devices should bring their equipment to IT Services. Personal equipment is not eligible for onsite service or pickup and is billable at an hourly rate (currently $100/hour), plus parts.

Computer Purchases

UAA utilizes the WSCA contract for purchasing Dell computer systems through Government Computer Sales (GCS). The agreement supports both institutional and personal computer equipment purchases. To initiate a purchase, or to seek advice in purchasing a new computer, call the Technical Support Center at 786-4646.

Warranties

All of the computers that IT Services purchases come with a warranty. Warranties allow for budget planning and avoiding unexpected costs. They assure the lifetime of your equipment.

  • Dell Warranties - All workstations purchased through the UAA/GCS/Dell e-commerce are configured with a five-year warranty on parts as standard. For servers, and other brands, a five-year warranty on parts is recommended.
  • Apple Warranties - Apple offers a standard one-year warranty. A three-year warranty on parts is recommended, and may be purchased as an upgrade.

Computer Labs

There many computer labs, and computer enabled classrooms across the Anchorage campus for use by students, staff, and faculty. These Computer Labs are operated under the control and management of their College, School, or Department. Additionally, IT Services maintains a number of virtual computer labs and one open lab for in person use.

The in person lab is located in the Library, Room 105. For details on this lab, please see the Library Open Computer Lab (LIB 105) Knowledge Base article.
