Non-Endowed Scholarship A minimum gift of $5,000 is required for a named scholarship.
All or a portion of the funds may be awarded each year. The minimum award is $500.
Endowed Scholarship A minimum gift of $25,000 is needed to establish an endowment.
Endowments are invested and only a portion of the earnings is awarded each year as scholarships. The minimum award is $500.
Establishing a Scholarship The UAA Office of Development will work with you to help define any restrictions you may wish to place on the scholarship (academic major, etc.). Gifts with overly specific restrictions may not be workable or may not qualify as gifts for tax purposes (e.g. gifts earmarked for a specific individual).
Scholarship Application Process
Students apply for all Foundation scholarships using a single application due in the spring of each year for awards made the following fall. Advertisements of the availability of scholarships and applications are posted throughout the University and in most high schools throughout Alaska.
The applications are received and sorted by the Financial Aid or Development Offices. Selection Committees review the applications and select recipients for each award. The Scholarship Coordinator reviews each selection to ensure the donor's restrictions have been met and the University of Alaska Foundation is then notified to provide the scholarship award to the student. The Financial Aid Office or Selection Committee sends an award letter to the recipient explaining what scholarship has been awarded and how the funds will be provided to the student.
The award is provided to the student when he or she registers for classes in the fall. In most instances the student's account is credited for the amount of the scholarship and this credit reduces or eliminates the amount of tuition, fees or other expenses the student must pay upon registration. Awards which are $1,000 or larger are most often provided to the student in two equal amounts, one half at fall registration and one half at registration for the succeeding spring semester.
