Bachelor of Science Nutrition

NOTE: UAA's Nutrition degree program (BS Nutrition) is currently at capacity and will not be admitting any new majors during the 2011-12 academic year.

The Culinary Arts, Hospitality/Dietetics & Nutrition division is excited to offer a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition; a truly expanding and viable career field.

Students will learn:

  • Basic anatomy, chemistry, and biology
  • Nutrition science
  • Nutrition issues that people face at different stages of the lifecycle
  • The role race, ethnicity, and culture play in nutrition
  • Nutrition as it relates to various health and disease states
  • Communication skills

Ample elective credits are part of the program to allow students to work with an advisor to customize their learning plan. Depending on the student's interest and career goals, elective credits in Business, English, or Physical Fitness may be of benefit. A full listing of course requirements can be found in the UAA catalog.

The Nutrition degree has two options for emphasis areas: Community Nutrition or Nutrition Science. The Community Nutrition emphasis prepares students to work in general health and wellness positions or for advance study in public health or related fields. The Nutrition Science emphasis prepares students for research or advanced study in nutrition or the medical field.  Neither of these options provide students the requirements to become a Registered Dietitian (RD). Students interested in that career path should meet with a nutrition advisor about their options.

The Nutrition degree is designed as a State-wide program. The general education and pre-requisite courses can be taken at UA campuses around the State. All Dietetics and Nutrition (DN) courses are offered online; most are exclusively online. Most DN courses are offered 1-2 times per year. Please see the DN Course Rotation handout at link below for information on when those courses are typically offered.

For more information or advising for the Nutrition degree, please call (907) 786-1276 or email DN@uaa.alaska.edu
