"No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, shall be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subject to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance." -Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972 to the 1964 Civil Rights Act
Title IX is commonly thought of as pertaining to Athletics. However, the law is actually much broader. Title IX prohibits gender discrimination in all programs and activities of a university such as the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA). Although two of the most common applications of the law are athletics and sexual harassment, Title IX also applies to admissions, financial aid, academic matters, career services, counseling and medical services, and all other programs, events and activities available to students at UAA. Members of the university community, guests and visitors have the right to be free from sexual violence. All members of the campus community are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that does not infringe upon the rights of others. UAA takes all matters of Sexual Harassment, Sexual Assault and Sexual Violence seriously. If you have concerns or need to report an incident, please contact a Title IX Coordinator or Investigator. Their contact information is listed below.
