Director of ENRI and Professor of Biology

As the Director of ENRI, I would like to welcome you to our website and to the University of Alaska Anchorage. ENRI is now becoming the premier research unit in the new Conoco Phillips Integrated Science Building (CPISB).  Our Faculty Fellows occupy more than two thirds (~15,000 square feet) of the building's modern, state-of-the-art research space, and our business office has moved into the CPISB administrative suites.  Our research funding from NSF has reach new heights; over the past year we have received over $3 million for studies in Alaska, the Arctic and the Antarctic. Currently, ENRI has approximately $10 million in actively funded research projects.  As a campus-based unit, ENRI is now positioned to lead UAA’s integrated science mission and provide new research opportunities for our undergraduate and graduate students as well as our postdoctoral fellows.

A meeting with Senator Begich and his Croatian visitor was held at UAA in August to discuss trajectories of UAA, ENRI's program in Climate Change and the opportunities to share expertise and interests with European partners. Dr. Welker highlighted ENRI's programs in Ecosystem Processes, Plant and Animal Ecology and Coupled Human-Environment Interactions as part of the discussion.
