JPN A101    First-year Japanese I - 4.0 CR 
Introductory course for students with no previous knowledge of the Japanese language. Develops listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in Japanese for effective communication at the elementary level. Students gain understanding of basic cross-cultural perspectives.

JPN A102    First-year Japanese II - 4.0 CR 
Continuation of introductory course. Further develops elementary listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in Japanese for effective communication. Enhances appreciation of cross-cultural perspectives. 

JPN A201    Second-year Japanese I - 4.0 CR 
Intermediate course for students with basic knowledge of Japanese. Enhances listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills for effective communication at the Intermediate I level. Students critically examine diverse cultural perspectives.

JPN A202    Second-year Japanese I - 4.0 CR 
Continuation of first semester in intermediate Japanese. Further develops listening, speaking, reading, and writing proficiency for effective communication and in preparation for advanced study of Japanese. Students interpret diverse cultural perspectives.

JPN A290    Zen Sitting/Tea Ceremony/Calligraphy - 1.0 CR
Topics in Japanese Culture - Zen Meditation, Calligraphy or Tea Ceremony (offered on an alternating basis). Gives students opportunities to learn Japanese culture first hand.

JPN A301    Third-year Japanese I - 4.0 CR
Reinforcement of the fundamentals of the Japanese language introduced in the introductory & intermediate level. Develops the functional ability to communicate in Japanese beyond the survival level. More Kanji, vocabulary, and expressions are introduced. Continued efforts to develop oral and written fluency in informal and formal situations.

JPN A302    Third-year Japanese II - 4.0 CR
Further reinforcement of the fundamentals of the Japanese language introduced in the introductory & intermediate level. Develops the functional ability to communicate in Japanese beyond the survival level. More Kanji, vocabulary, and expressions are introduced. Continued efforts to develop oral and written fluency in informal and formal situations. Reading of contemporary texts of literature, business, social topics.

JPN A350    Business Japanese - 3.0 CR
Focuses on working knowledge of Japanese business and financial terminology, Japanese business culture, and business practices. Study of business correspondence, terms and jargon, negotiations, and other topics useful in the Japanese business environment. 

JPN A390A    Japanese Society and Culture A - 3.0 CR
Examines various aspects of Japanese culture and society with critical analysis of textual and cultural artifacts (e.g. historical, political, literary) through a variety of disciplinary methodologies. Enhances Japanese language skills in writing, reading, speaking, listening, and cultural literacy. Course conducted in Japanese. Course may be repeated twice for credit with change of subtitle. 

JPN A390B    Japanese Society and Culture B - 3.0 CR
An overview of Japanese culture and society on a selected topic, with critical analysis through a variety of disciplinary methodologies (e.g. historical, sociological, political, and literary). Course may be repeated with change of subtitle. Course conducted in English. 

JPN A494    Special Topics in Literature and Film - 3.0 CR
Study of Japanese narratives, literary movements, periods, genres and styles in relation to culture and society. Cultivates students' insight into Japanese aesthetics. Develops students' intercultural understanding through critical and comparative analysis. Course is conducted in Japanese. Maybe repeated once for credit with change of subtitle.
