** CALL FOR PRESENTERS **

To all college/university and highschool students

The Alaska Native Oratory Society (AKNOS) is calling for participants and presenters who want to articulate the challenging issues that Alaska Native and Indigenous peoples are facing. Community resilience, global climate change, high cost of energy or affordable energy alternatives, socio-cultural issues, challenges to subsistence and Indigenous education are key themes.

This 10th Anniversary Celebration will not be a competition. The event will be a celebration of oratory.

Participants and presenters must submit a proposal under the appropriate category by

Monday, April 09, 2012.

Categories include:

1.  Presentations:  An original written and orally delivered speech on the theme(s) of community resilience, global climate change, high cost of energy, challenges to subsistence, socio-cultural issues, and Indigenous education.  ( 7 minute time limit )

2.  Commemorative Narration (Dramatic Declamation): A 5-10 minute interpretive reading or recitation of an historic Alaska Native or Indigenous speech of persuasive document. Speakers are encouraged to give impressions of the document's author through acting, movement, costume and delivery. The Declamation will be preceded with introductory remarks to provide an understanding of the material, the author, title and date of the speech. The original speech text will be published, recorded or transcribed andthe introductory remarks and declamation text must be made available to event officials prior to the beginning of the oratory celebration.

3.  Storytelling:  A 5-7 minute presentation of an Alaska Native or Indigenous cultural story. The story(ies) must have permission from the author, clan, elder, or tribal community when appropriate. The story(ies) should be preceded by introductory remarks that provide an understanding of the material and state the origin of the story.

4.  Alaska Native or Indigenous language: 5-7minute presentation in an Alaska Native or Indigenous language that may include a story, song, and/or cultural knowledge.

5.  Humor: 3-5 minutes. Humor is a vital aspect of Alaska Native and Indigenous cultural expressions. Humor keeps us happy!

6.  Poetry/Rap/Spoken word: 3-5 minutes. Participants may write an original poem, or spoken word presentation, including Rap. Presenters are asked to keep in mind that this is an "all-ages" event.

PARTICIPANTS WILL BE INCLUDED IN A DRAWING TO WIN AN iPAD 3. TEN WILL BE GIVEN AWAY THROUGH A DRAWING AT THE CLOSE OF THE APRIL 14 EVENT. All participants will receive a $15.00 iTunes gift card!
