Tuition

You must request tuition for a student researcher unless the Sponsor will not pay tuition costs (include documentation w/proposal). If you wish to supply tuition from another source, include a memo confirming the source and available funds with your proposal. Please note that students must be in the state for two years to qualify for the in-state tuition rate, or they can apply for resident status after residing in the state for one year under the university's "bona fide resident" provision. For budget planning on proposals, the OSP recommends two years of out-of-state tuition. Tuition and Fees Link.

2009/2010 in-state graduate tuition is $316 per credit or $5,688 for 18 credits - (full time 9 credits for 2 academic semesters).
2009/2010 out-of-state graduate tuition is $646 per credit or $11,628 for 18 credits - (full time 9 credits for 2 academic semesters)

Student Health Care Fees

Beginning in FY08, all research proposal budgets must include health insurance for graduate students at the following rates:

Annual cost: $1,188/year for health insurance.
Semester costs follow: Fall Semester $442.00; Spring Semester $442.00; Summer Semester $304.00.

Budget only the amount for the semester(s) when the student is on the project. For example: If a student will be working on the project only during the academic year, budget $884.00 (for the Fall and Spring semesters, but not the Summer semester). If you're budgeting tuition during a given year, you should also include these costs, however, they will be entered as a separate budget line item. These costs are subject to F&A (account code 1949) in the costs are included for a research or teaching assistantship. These costs do not recover F&A and are excluded from the MTDC base if they are included as part of a student scholarship or fellowship (account code 6105).

Student Stipends

Check with your Fiscal Officer to determine how to calculate student salary as it varies between each unit/department or contact Elisa Mattison emattison@uaa.alaska.edu, Graduate School, regarding Student Stipend concerns.

Example of student stipend and benefit calculations:
A student working 20 hrs/wk for two semesters (ECLS GN or SN) plus extra time on holidays may work a total of 760 hrs. A student working 40 hrs/wk during the summer (ECLS GT or ST) may work 560 hrs. FT summer work also accrues staff benefits of 8%. Total hours for an entire year: 1320. Each department on campus determines the number of student hours worked per year slightly differently. Contact your fiscal office for more information on the number of hours a student may work in your department.
