Tuition and Student Information

Tuition

You must request tuition for a student researcher unless the Sponsor will not pay tuition costs (include documentation w/proposal). If you wish to supply tuition from another source, include a memo confirming the source and available funds with your proposal. Please note that students must be in the state for 2 years to qualify for the in-state tuition rate, or they can apply for resident status after residing in the state for one year under the university's "bona fide resident" provision. For budget planning on proposals, the OSP recommends 2 years of out-of-state tuition. Tuition and Fees Link.

2008 in-state grad tuition is $301 per credit or $5,418 for 18 credits - (full time 9 credits for 2 academic semesters).
2008 out-of-state grad tuition is $615 per credit or $11,070 for 18 credits - (full time 9 credits for 2 academic semesters)

Student Health Care Fees

Starting in FY08, all proposal budgets must include health insurance for graduate students at a rate of $500/semester (Fall, Spring, and Summer) or $1500/year. Budget only the amount for the semester(s) when the student is on the project. For example: If a student is only on a project during the academic year, budget $1,000 (for the Fall and Spring semesters, but not the Summer semester). If you're budgeting tuition in a given year, you should also budget these costs. This amount should be listed as a separate budget line item. These costs are subject to F&A (account code 1949) in the costs are included for a research or teaching assistantship. These costs do not recover F&A and are excluded from the MTDC base if they are included as part of a student scholarship or fellowship (account code 6105).

Student Stipends

Check with your Fiscal Officer to determine how to calculate student salary as it varies between each unit/department or Elisa Mattison emattison@uaa.alaska.edu in Graduate Studies on Student Stipend concerns.

  • Graduate student compensation will be gradually increasing to bring the stipend rates up to national norms beginning in Spring 2006.
  • Beginning in FY08, research proposal budgets should also include $1,500/year for health insurance.

Example of student stipend:
A student working 20 hrs/wk for two semesters (ECLS GN or SN) plus extra time on holidays may work a total of 760 hrs. A student working 40 hrs/wk during the summer (ECLS GT or ST) may work 560 hrs. FT summer work also accrues staff benefits of 8.5%. Total hours for a whole year: 1320. Each department on campus determines the number of student hours worked per year slightly differently. Contact your fiscal office to for more information on how many hours a student may work in your department.

Calculating a student stipend: ($hourly)(1320)
Calculating student benefits: ($hourly)(560)(.085)

To calculate a students stipend: $hourly x 1320
To calculate a students benefits: $hourly x 560 x .085
