About Student Support Services

Student Support Services (SSS) is a federally funded Trio program that is in its third year of programming at the University of Alaska-Anchorage. Our mission is to assist 160 eligible students per year to persist and graduate from UAA byproviding an interconnected series of academic support services (study skill development to achieve academic success, peer tutoring to master course content, intensive academic and individual advisement to build confidence).There is no cost for our services. We are located in the Eugene Short Building in Suite 201.

Currently there are over 900 SSS programs across the nation. Although each program is different, we all have the same purpose: to retain and graduate the students we serve.

As an SSS participant, we will offer you quality service at all times. We will listen, help you find answers to your questions, treat you with courtesy and respect, and address your needs in a timely manner. We will also refer you to other services on campus that might be useful in meeting your needs.

What is TRiO?

The name TRiO now refers to the five educational assistance programs funded under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965.

In the mid 1960’s, in support of President Lyndon Johnson’s “War on Poverty,” Congress established a series of educational support programs to help low income and first generation Americans enter college, graduate and move on to participate more fully in America’s economic and social arenas. TRiO programs serve over 800,000 Americans.

Three programs were initially funded (hence the term TRiO), now there are five:

1) Upward Bound offers participating high school students (grades 9-12) academic & non-academic support to enter post-secondary education;

2) Educational Talent Search serves students, grades 6-12, during the school year;

3) Student Support Services provides academic and personal support services to college students;

4) Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program serves juniors and seniors in college with the purpose of encouraging and preparing participants to enter graduate school;

5) Educational Opportunity Centers provide college entrance and financial aid information to older Americans who are economically disadvantaged.
