Question for Betty.

Every time after I have sex with my boyfriend, I get really bad pains in my lower abdomen.  We have both been tested and don't have any STI's.  What could cause this, and why is it happening?

There are many things that could cause lower abdominal pain with intercourse.  The pain may result from deep penetration and/or mild irritation of the cervix.  However, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) could still be the cause, depending on when you and your boyfriend were tested and how many partners you gave each had since then.  Some conditions that could also be the culprit are pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), ovarian cysts, endometriosis, neoplasm, ectopic pregnancy, and cystitis.  The only way to know for sure is to see your health care provider, or make an appointment with the SHCC for an evaluation.
