You are being extra diligent about preventing pregnancy, but you do not need to take emergency contraception when you have been regularly taking the oral contraceptive Lutera for over one month.
Emergency contraceptive pills containing levonorgestrel alone such as Plan B, reduce the risk of pregnancy after unprotected intercourse by 89%. Combination oral contraceptives, with ethinyl estradiol and either norgestrel or levonorgestrel can reduce the risk by 74%. Lutera is a combination oral contraceptive and could be used for emergency contraception by taking 5 white pills followed by another 5 white pills in 12 hours. Treatment should be taken as soon as possible after unprotected intercourse, definitely within 120 hours, or 5 days.
The key here is "unprotected intercourse". True, you did not use condoms, but, you are protected from pregnancy by taking oral contraceptives. You are not protected from sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Make an appointment with your health care provider to be tested for STIs. But, do not take extra Lutera. Keep taking your regular one pill daily. Call your heath care provider or the SHCC, at 786-4040, if you have any further questions or concerns.
