When UAA students have a STI (sexually transmitted infection) screened at the SHCC the labs are sent to the State of Alaska Laboratory. Then the State Lab sends SHCC the lab results. The SHCC notifies the student of the results, and if positive, has the student return for treatment. The SHCC then reports positive infectious disease to the State Epidemiology Department, as required by State law. The Epi staff may then contact the student to see if they were treated, and for possible contacts. This whole process is to prevent the spread of potentially fatal diseases.
