Question for Betty.

I started my period 2 weeks early, should I keep taking my birth control normally, or stop and start again when my period is over?

Betty's Answer.

You should continue to take your oral contraceptives daily, even if you begin bleeding between menses, (also called break through bleeding or BTB).  BTB can be caused by many things, including taking pills late, missed pills, stress, vaginal infection and weight loss.  You still need to take a pill every day. Use a back-up method, such as condoms until your cycle is re-established.  If you continue to spot through your next pack of pills contact your health care provider or the SHCC for an appointment.
