The partnership between UAA and APU supports student internships for pollution prevention. We have successfully involved students conducting various pollution reduction studies and projects.
UAA funded an intern for the City of Homer to develop its Climate Action Plan. The intern worked throughout the Summer of 2007 to collect baseline data and document Homer's carbon footprint and then successfully helped strategize its plan to reduce carbon emissions. This is the first Climate Action Planto be created in Alaska.
APU funded several student interns who tackled the following projects and issues. Additional information about these projects can be found in APU EPA P2 Internship Project Summary.
- Cleaner Commute Contest Coordination resulting in measurable reductions in greenhouse gasses and particulates
- Veggie Oil Cooperative Feasibility Study to use reclaimed oil from community restaurants and APU kitchens resulted in identifying needed changes in public policy
- Campus Composting Project: From kitchen waste and grounds waste collection and composting for use at APU's Spring Creek Farm resulting in measurable reductions in waste into Municipality of Anchorage's waste disposal system
- Hazardous Waste Site Assessment at APU's Spring Creek Farm by identifying contaminated areas for clean-up
- Lighting Efficiency Analysis and Communication Projectproduced measurable reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and will serve as a model for implementing and monitoring future lighting upgrades.
