· Headed the development of a fully-automated system to traverse and analyze DNA molecules on conductive substrates. This work resulted in a novel scanning tunneling instrument capable of performing tens of thousands of spectroscopic measurements per day to identify molecular features while traversing a single 2 nm wide molecule. Much of this work involved close cooperation with a research team to develop tools and techniques to manipulate DNA molecules on a variety of substrates while meeting quarterly deadlines established by a private funding agency.
· Led an interdisciplinary team of researchers to develop electronic nanoscale sensors for the detection of various biomolecules including nucleic acids and proteins. These sensors have a power consumption of less than 1 nW, a footprint of less than 1 μm², and are fabricated using afully CMOS compatible process.
· Characterized the electrical properties of 7 nm wide palladium coated _-DNA molecules on mica substrates. These metal-coated organic molecules serve as a potential platform for electronic components, making their electrical characterization important to future development using this platform.
· Developed a microfluidic malaria detection tool using light microscopy. Image processing techniques were utilized to compensate for the use of inexpensive optics with chromatic and geometric aberrations as well as contaminated optical trains, resulting in a system with the potential for low-cost malarial screening.

· Mentored ALVA (Alliances for Learning and Vision for underrepresented Americans) incoming college freshman. Developed research plans for students to explore Electrical Engineering research hands-on as incoming freshman, while engaging in work which provides a practical contribution to ongoing research. Responsibilities included identifying student interests and tailoring research and mentoring to their goals, as well as assisting with the development of a final student-run poster and oral research presentation.
Teaching Assistant and Laboratory Instructor, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Washington, Seattle, WA, April – June 2006 and 2007
· Instructed a twice-weekly three-hour laboratory session on the use of instruments for nano/microscale electronic device fabrication and characterization. Methods and instruments covered included SEM, TEM, AFM, STM, confocal LSM, Raman microscopy, photolithography, electron beam lithography, thin film deposition, RIE, and wet chemical processing.
· Worked with groups of graduate students to develop realistic research project goals and develop systematic approaches to achieve these goals within a fixed research schedule.
· Received the “Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award” for the department of Electrical Engineering in 2006.
Contract Writer, Department of Transportation, State of Alaska, Utilities Division, Summer/Winter 2000-2004
· Coordinated with utility companies, engineers, and project managers to estimate utility relocation needs related to road construction projects and draft contracts with these various private and public utilities. Alaska has a short and well-defined annual construction schedule, making contracts and change orders critical to on-time completion of high priority construction projects. This work involved frequent visits to project sites to determine relocation needs, estimate relocation costs, and verify utility relocation progress.
· 2003-2004, Washington State University, Senior Design Project: designed and developed a hydroelectric generator temperature monitoring system, and integrated this system with existing monitoring and control systems for Avista Utilities at their Post Falls dam site. This system collected thermal histories of hydroelectric generators designed for 50+ years of operation. This automated monitoring system was incorporated into an existing monitoring system to predict and prevent environmental and health impacts related to ozone emission, as well as generator failure due to winding insulation deterioration.
