How long will the program take?

  • That will depend on you; what prerequisites you have already completed, your work and family commitments.
  • Each returning RN is unique and there is no typical time frame. You might take one course a semester or go full time. It is possible to complete all the nursing courses in four semesters.

What is the Process for admissions?

  • Admissions packets due on March 1 and November 1 each year
  • Admissions requirements slightly different from basic student admissions requiring AK RN license and GPA of 2.0.
  • Currently no restrictions on numbers of students although require a cohort of at least 8 for clinical courses
  • Clinical requirements include CPR, current immunizations, annual HIV test, and results of national level criminal background check

Will I have to repeat and/or challenge courses I took before?

  • RN licensure credit allows an accepted degree-seeking student with current unencumbered RN licensure to receive 26.5 UAA nursing course credits.
  • An administrative fee is charged for these credits.

  • There are courses that you can challenge; for instance there is a challenge process for the lifespan development course and there are CLEP tests for some general requirements.

Nursing electives

  • 6 credits are required
  • 3 credits from a non-nursing prefix can be utilized such as Psychology of Women, Psychology of Addictions as long as it supports your practice
  • 3 credits may be waived if you have national specialty certification

What clinical is required?

  • Two semesters of community health (NS 314L and NS 411L) can be completed locally.
  • One semester of complex care (NS 408L) to be completed in a practice area of your choice. Individually arranged with you by the faculty member.

What does it cost?

What about computer support?

  • The UAA IT Call Center can help with a variety of computer/internet related concerns including login information for Blackboard, Webmail, & My UA Portal. They offer basic troubleshooting as well as Blackboard and Elluminate (eLive) support, and help with setting up personal web hosting space. The CallCenter also offers Norton antivirus software to all UAA students.
