Greenhouse gas emissions topic of April 17, 2007 debate

by Kathleen McCoy  |

The University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolf Debate Team is preparing their arguments for the upcoming public debate and discussion, entitled Should the state impose limits on greenhouse gas emissions by Alaska businesses and government agencies? The debate will take place on Tuesday, April 17 from 7-9 p.m. in the UAA APU Consortium Library, room 307. Some greenhouse gases occur naturally in the atmosphere, while others result from human activities such as burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, livestock, the use of chlorofluorocarbons (CFC's) in refrigeration systems, agricultural activities and more.  Greenhouse gas emissions from industry, transportation and agriculture are likely one of the main causes of global warming.

Sponsored by UAA's Center for Advancing Faculty Excellence (CAFE), the debate will involve faculty respondents and the larger community for a public discussion.  This event is part of a series of debates on public policy sponsored each semester by CAFE since 2003 to provide forums for Alaskans to participate in discussions of policies and issues affecting their future.  This debate is also a part of the Ford Foundation's Difficult Dialogues initiative at UAA that provides for academic and campus programs that enrich learning, encourage new scholarship and engage students and faculty in constructive dialogue about contentious political, religious, racial and cultural issues.

Members of the UAA student body, faculty, staff and the larger community are invited to attend this public debate.  This event is free and open to the public.  Free parking is available in the UAA/APU Consortium Library parking lot beginning at 6:30 p.m.
