Artists for Visual Integration and Educational Work
by Kathleen McCoy |
Artists for Visual Integration and Educational Work, with sponsorship from the Municipality
of Anchorage, will host a free event on Saturday, June 9 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in
the parking lot of the Mountain View Community Church, 4103 Mountain View Drive.
The event will celebrate "Mountain View Murals," where the community will help paint
ten mural designs developed by Clark Middle School students in Mountain View. The
completed murals will hang on the fence surrounding the construction site for the
new Clark Middle School. Davis Construction has generously donated the plywood for
the mural panels, and Blaine's Art Supply has donated paint and supplies. There will
be music and spoken word poetry provided by "Different by Design" productions. Food
and other logistical supplies are being donated by a variety of local sponsors.
This is the inauguration of the AVIEW project, a partnership between UAA, the Municipality
of Anchorage, and Camp Fire Alaska. To build community pride, reduce antisocial behaviors,
and beautify a section of Anchorage, this multi-year project will use UAA art students
and Camp Fire Alaska staff to train Mountain View area middle school students to design
and paint the traffic and utility boxes in their neighborhood. This project includes
community involvement, leadership development, and art skills training components.
If successful in 2007-08 as a pilot project, this model will be further developed
and extended to other neighborhoods in Anchorage, while continuing in Mountain View
to further develop community pride and student leadership.
The Mountain View area is rapidly growing and changing, and with Clark Middle School
construction and the road developments, this is a prime opportunity for the community
of people in Mountain View to celebrate their diversity through art. This will be
a community celebration for people of all ages with middle school and high school
students invited to help with the mural painting.
