University Honors College student and psychology major Candace Lewis has just been named a winner of the highly coveted Truman Scholarship, one of the nation's most esteemed undergraduate awards. Lewis will receive the $30,000 merit-based grant which is given annually by the Truman Scholarship Foundation in recognition of students with exceptional leadership potential who are committed to careers in government, non-profit or advocacy sectors, education, or public service.

A Wasilla High graduate, Lewis is focused on revising the current foster care system. In addition to attending a full schedule of classes, Candace works full-time at GCI. After receiving her bachelor's degree, she hopes to pursue her Ph.D. in clinical psychology at the University of Colorado.

With Lewis' award, UAA became one of only 10 universities in the country to have had three consecutive Truman Scholarship winners. Other universities include Brown, Georgetown and Stanford.
